Aliens!

Last night I met someone who was really into aliens. I've been thinking about some of the things he said. He started by talking about the newly discovered planet Gliese 581g, which seems capable of supporting life. I'd read about this and told him that I didn't believe there to be any life. It's much bigger than earth and orbits very closely around it's star, meaning its atmosphere must be super dense and its soil must be sterile from all the radiation.

He remarked that the bigger implication was this: because we found this planet so close to us (20 light years away) and so early on in our search it must mean there are billions of similar planets capable of supporting life. And this must mean intelligent aliens exist somewhere. He then said he believed we made contact already and the governments of the world are conditioning the public to be ready for the announcement. Last week, the UN appointed an ambassador for alien contact, a Vatican astronomer told the press he would love to baptize an alien and former US military personal held a press conference -apparently broadcast live by CNN- where they informed us aliens had been watching our nuclear stockpile.

I asked him what was holding the governments back from just telling us and he envisioned worldwide riots, plummeting stock markets and mass panic if they announced alien contact now. I disagreed, I believe that we as a species are mature enough to deal with such info and would probably return to our normal daily routine minutes after such an announcement.

Where do you stand? Do you believe aliens exist and are visiting us? Do you believe people would panic if Obama reveals that he's been talking to little green men?

  4. Haha man, I think about this stuff CONSTANTLY. Did you ever read the short story "The Gift of Mercy"? It's amazing. It's about life on other planets...

  5. All alien should be given a chance imho!

  6. Alien's would (if we were at war) decimate us pretty darn easily. We are not even a Type 1 civilization yet.

  7. Well alien forms sure must exist in endless universe... but are they smart enough to come to our planet... that means they are smarter and more advanced than our human species and ofcourse proobably not so stupit to create a war...

  10. Wanna know what i believe?

Ok here goes the long comment:

Out of the billions and billions and billions of planets, there MUST be another form of life somewhere.
The chances that that form of life is advanced enough to travel to earth is thinner, but still plausible.
the chance that out of all the billions of billions of billions of planet, they'd choose to come to ours is even thinner.
Now imagine that those aliens decide to spend a colossal amount of money to make the travel to our planet (moving through hundreds of lightyears is very costly, probably even with incredible technology), do you think that they would just ABDUCT A FEW PEOPLE HERE AND THERE, TALK TO ONE OR TWO GOVERNMENT MEMBERS (who they can't even understand before they learn our language) AND FLY OVER POPULATED TOWNS?
It doesn't make sense, if they had reached earth, it would have looked more like district 9 than anything else.

  11. Make sure you give him a tin foil hat to wear as well.

  12. I believe that there could be intelligent life out there somewhere, but if the Government knew they wouldn't cover it up.

  13. I mirror that sentiment! Given the scale of the universe, there has to be something else out there, somewhere.

  14. I think there is, infinite amounts of planets.. and people say theres no chance that one of them has intelligent life?

  15. I of course believe in aliens. Like the person you talked to, the universe is just too vast for us to be the other lifeforms. Now, I differ in the fact that I don't believe our government officials have been communicating with them all this time.

  16. I don't really believe that they are visiting us, but I believe there are aliens somewhere out there.

  17. I certainly believe that aliens are not influencing humanity... but there existence is an open question otherwise.

  18. Since the discovery of that new planet that supposedly can support life, I've been thinking more and more about aliens. Interesting stuff.

  19. I think we are the creation of advanced beings. In short, they are here, its only a matter of time.

  20. I think it's pretty ignorant to believe that we are the sole living creatures in the entire universe.

  21. I dunno if they'd be full blown thigns that have the same intelligence and brain capacity as humans, but I defintiely think there's life out there

  22. ive been seeing a lot of aliens in SoCal lately

  23. The way I see it, there has to be aliens out there. There is no way we're the only ones in an infinite universe.

  24. I thought I was abducted by aliens once. I still haven't come up with a reasonable explanation for what happened.

    ReplyDelete
  25. They probably do exist, but I doubt that they would want anything to do with us at the moment.

  26. People might panic, I wouldn't. And they may exist.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I wouldn't panic. If I met an alien I wouldn't kill it, so I presume it wouldn't kill me.

  28. Aliens probably exist somewhere. Universe is very big, probably nearly infinite, so there are is sigh chance that somewhere there exist other life than us. What I don't believe is that we are already communicating with them or things like that. 99% of those conspiracy theories are just plain bullshit.
